we were here started with a simple feeling: that too many places are disappearing without anyone noticing. A closed mill town. A village emptied out. A high street that used to be the centre of someone’s whole world. We wanted to sit with those places while they’re still standing, and make sure their stories are told.
The two of us travel the back roads to towns and places that have quietly slipped out of memory. When we get somewhere, we dig into its history — how it began, who lived there, what it made, and why it faded. Then we film a kind of lesson on location: one of us to camera, walking you through the story of the ground we’re standing on.
It’s history, but not from a textbook. It’s history told in the actual place it happened, so it feels like being shown around by a friend who did the reading for you.
When a place is forgotten, it’s easier to let it fall apart. But when people know a town’s story — and can see a way to help — things change. That’s why every place we visit gets its own page here: a clear rundown of its history, and honest, practical ways to support it, from donations to local groups you can get involved with.
We tell each place’s story with care and accuracy, and we always point back to the people still working to keep it alive.
[Add your names and a short line about yourselves here.] We’re the two behind we were here — partners in the project and on the road. (Replace this paragraph with your own introduction: who you are, where you’re based, and why these places matter to you.)
